A list of aspects of the trip will help ensure that you leave nothing important behind and that you are ready and prepared in case of an emergency.

When it's time for a road vacation trip, don't forget these tips for a pleasant trip:

  • Check your vehicle: A complete vehicle check before a road trip should include checking fluid levels. Make sure the wiper blades and your system are working properly. Check your lights, including the high beams, to make sure they work. Last but not least, don't forget your tires. Tires are the connection between your vehicle and the road, so be sure to examine the treads for signs of wear.

"Traction and tread are inextricably linked. The undercuts in your tires are very important to get the water out and the tire to hold onto the road," says Sarah Robinson, a Michelin safety specialist. "Making sure your tires have the proper treads are often the difference between avoiding an accident and being a part of one."

  • Get ready: equip your vehicle with an emergency kit that includes water, flashing lights, a blanket, auxiliary cables, extra windshield washer fluid, phone charger, and emergency numbers for roadside assistance, as well as the number of a contact person at your destination.

  • Plan your route: check your route in advance, if possible; Plan your trip for the hours with less traffic. If you are thinking of using a map application on your phone, use the voice component; If you don't have one, check a physical map to get your bearings before you get behind the wheel.
  • Safety first: That means the driver must focus on driving. If you are the driver and need to see your phone, send a message, grab a snack, or attend to a child or pet in the back seat, wait for a layby or, if necessary, steer to the side of the road.
  • Check the weather: Especially during the winter holidays, knowing the weather beforehand can assist you to avoid a storm. If the conditions are really dangerous, the smart thing to do would be to postpone your trip until the weather improves.
